Applications

There are many applications that people use on a daily basis that uses Geospatial Technology. Have you ever looked up how to get to someone's house using a search engine or Mapquest? Have you ever wondered how On Star can tell you the location of your car at any time? Well, Geospatial Technology is used in your GPS system or map program. This tells you your location, or displays the geographic information you submitted. The geographic information system (GIS) is the technology that enables you to create searches, analyze the spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results produced of all these operations.

Here are a couple examples of Geospatial technology:

Airplane Travel

Geospatial technology is used within the auto pilot program on airplanes. The program has to be able to know where it is going and where it currently is flying. That’s how the pilot can tell you how much longer your flight is going to be while in the air.

GPS Devices

A GPS is the most common thing people use with geospatial technology. These devices are used in many products. Cars, and cell phones are the common ones. Your car will tell you where to go, and when to make a turn. The GPS has your current location and with maps, can map out the route you need to go. Cell phones have a GPS locator device on them. Some phones can even tell you the longitude and latitude of your current location.
